Relax With Beethoven

Beethoven had a reputation for tempestuous outbursts, including a hot-headed argument with a policeman following his arrest for drunken behavior. This playlist, however, features music showing the composer’s more subdued side. Gone are the dramatic storms of Symphony No. 6, or the ominous sound of fate knocking at the door in Symphony No. 5: here you’ll find some of the most tender melodies in all classical music. There are moments of breathtaking beauty in the Piano Sonata No. 8, “Pathétique,” and the middle movement of the Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor,” while the late string quartets showcase some of Beethoven’s most profound and introspective writing.
