R.L. Burnside Essentials

R.L. Burnside’s voice thrived in uncharted territory, propelled by a gritty intuition. An incomparable Mississippi bluesman at his core, Burnside, who passed in 2005, approached each release with a knowing soul that reflected the juke-joint stylings he was committed to advancing. His storytelling skills were at their peak on tracks like “Someday Baby,” from 2004’s A Bothered Mind, in which he bade farewell to an unworthy partner. But his light also shone brightly on 1998’s Come on In standout “It’s Bad You Know,” which was driven by his sparse yet soul-stirring vocals and house-adjacent grooves.
