After Sex Pistols imploded, frontman John Lydon formed post-punk pioneers PiL, rejecting punk's back-to-basics sound in favor of everything from Krautrock and dub to disco and the avant-garde. Early albums like Second Edition and Flowers of Romance challenged the band's fans. Even in PiL's more "commercial" phase, Lydon continued to tweak listener expectations.
