The Pretenders' trademark sound turns awfully fuzzy at the edges of their catalog. On “Don't Cut Your Hair,” their jangly New Wave gives way to bluesy rock laced with twangy licks; a horn-laced “Louie Louie” is a slice of hard-stomping R&B. Even more radical is Chrissie Hynde's work with Moodswings; after all, “Spiritual High (State of Independence), Pt. 2” is cosmic downtempo perfect for stargazing.
