Rightfully revered for his immersive microtonal compositions, Phill Niblock came to prominence in the late ‘60s, inspired by the vibrant sounds of fellow avant-garde composers like Morton Feldman and John Cage. Though he had no formal musical training, he hit upon a dense sound that relied on sustained notes and chords being held for long periods of time, melding it all together to create overtones and rhythms. Niblock's career has also been marked by some groundbreaking collaborations, including his work with Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, as well as famed cellist David Gibson.
