Phil Collins Essentials

After a stint as a child actor—blink and you'll miss him in A Hard Day's Night—Phil Collins joined progressive rockers Genesis for their second album, becoming their lead singer after frontman Peter Gabriel left for a solo career. Collins made his own solo debut with 1981's downcast Face Value, and by the time 1985's No Jacket Required came out, his R&B-influenced singles had turned him into an international pop star with an affable everyman image. After leaving Genesis in the early '90s, Collins continued his solo work until 2010, when he announced his musical retirement.
