Penny Tai’s Follow Your Heart: Entangled Longing

Whether you’re homesick, lovesick or hurting from the absence of someone, the pangs of longing can be maddening, as Penny Tai knows well. “Missing someone or something is like an unbalanced scale. Since you’re left rocking back and forth, why not follow the music and get immersed in the chaos?” she tells Apple Music. As Guest Curator of the Follow Your Heart series, the Malaysian singer-songwriter offers up a second playlist, “Entangled Longing”, which includes tracks from C-pop standouts Sandy Lam, Yoga Lin and A-Lin as well as South Korean stars Kwon Jin Ah and IU. She also taps the unique art-pop of sunwoojunga. “The diversity of her music is enough for me to recommend her songs on more than one playlist,” Tai says. She delves into her own ongoing journey by including the title track and “后果自负” (“Reap What You Sow”) from her new album, 被动的观众 (“The Passive Audience”). “I’m not fully recovered—maybe I’m still on the road to recovery,” she says. Tai shares her thoughts on some of the tracks: “SEATTLE” by SAM KIM “Every time I hear the sound of the piano pedal, my heart skips a beat. The most delicate connection is that every time I hear this song, I miss different people and things. I’m listening to it now…and I’m missing my family.” “Words Left Unsaid” by PoLin “How long has it been since you told your parents you love them? There are many things that we miss out on but expressing love for your family should be done without the least hesitation.” “A Beautiful Mess” by Jason Mraz “I realise that many curators have also shared this song but I still wanted to include it because it’s so beautiful. It will always be on my recommended playlist!”
