With four of the quintet also comprising Japanese punks BRAHMAN, it’s only natural that OVERGROUND ACOUSTIC UNDERGROUND bring a fresh intensity to their brand of acoustic folk rock. But where their other band explores Eastern musical influences, this combo—together with U.S. native Martin Johnson—mines Western traditions, with flutes and strings abound. Rowdy Celtic drinking songs (“The World”) sit alongside fiddle-happy bluegrass (“N.A.C”) and ramshackle country (“Thank you”), while “Dissonant Melody” even introduces an Irish folk chorus to African-inspired percussion in its verse.
