Onefour Essentials

Onefour Essentials

The fact that three of Onefour’s five members are incarcerated has not stopped the Mount Druitt drill crew from elevating to the most talked-about level of Australian hip-hop with astounding speed. Nor has it muffled their stark, sometimes violent, hard-to-swallow honesty about growing up in a marginalized, underprivileged community that constantly grapples with racial discrimination and high imprisonment rates. They first came to attention via the 2019 hype-up anthem “The Message,” and have since collaborated with artists such as Headie One, Burner, The Kid LAROI, and A$AP Ferg. As their sound and audience have grown, it’s become clear that they aren’t just riding a wave—they’re creating entirely new paths and sounds for Australian and Pacific Islander hip-hop. And while they take their cues from high-intensity UK drill and trap (“Shanks and Shivs,” “Ladz in the Hood”), they’re not afraid to experiment with more tender sounds, such as the soulful samples and low-key beats of “Welcome to Prison,” a grim reflection on a life of crime—and its all-too-real consequences.
