NRBQ Essentials

New England-based NRBQ (New Rhythm and Blues Quartet) began spinning pop nostalgia into high art in 1966. For every track of wistful pop perfection ("Ridin' in My Car," "Magnet"), a dozen others would goof on the Q's enthusiasms with countless in-jokes, all conveyed with boundless energy and exceptional musicianship. "Boozoo, That's Who?" celebrates zydeco accordionist Boozoo Chavis with a rollicking beat; “Howard Johnson's Got His Ho-Jo Workin'" serves as an enthusiastic commercial for the ubiquitous inn; and "12 Bar Blues" counts off each titular bar with a gleeful wink.
