Nooky Essentials

A strong sense of place and family runs through everything that Yuin rapper Corey Webster, aka Nooky, commits to record. His 2019 debut EP Junction Court and its 2021 follow-up Lyrebird Court are both named for specific sites in his hometown of Nowra, New South Wales, while tracks like “Cuzn” and “Ere Lah” proudly brandish distinctive South Coast slang. After discovering hip-hop as a teen surrounded by racism and crime alike, Nooky relocated to Sydney and signed to Briggs’ Bad Apples label, going on to collaborate with A.B. Original, The Herd, and Black Eyed Peas’ Taboo. Despite his hard-hitting modern delivery, Nooky never loses sight of his cultural identity: The piano-flecked 2019 ballad “Nowa Nowa, Pt. I” incorporates traditional storytelling while mourning the death of his cousin, and 2022’s “Run Dingo” samples influential singer/activist Black Allan Barker and likens systematic dingo culls to the often ruthless treatment of First Nations people.
