All NLE Choppa needed was a handful of piano notes and gut-punching bass to become a rap star. On 2019's breakout, "Shotta Flow," the Memphis MC uses a haunting melody and rumbling drums to highlight his eccentric, hyper-energized vocal style. He manipulates registers and patterns with the unpredictability of an inflatable air dancer in front of a used car lot. Choppa's voice is the show itself, imbued with an energy that never relents from its aggressive growl. After taking rap by storm, Choppa immediately proved he had more in the tank with his debut EP, Cottonwood—arriving less than a year later—and its standout track, "Camelot." NLE Choppa's formula is simple but tricky to replicate: Find some drums, maybe a piano line, and perhaps some pummeling bass, and rap like you may never be allowed to spit another bar again.
