John Darnielle is often considered a folk-leaning singer/songwriter, but his band The Mountain Goats has always pushed well beyond those boundaries. “Palmcorder Yanja” is fuzz-soaked indie rock depicting young lives mired in drugs, while “Liza Forever Minnelli” embraces a jazzy fluidity. And the DIY oldie “Cubs in Five” imagines a scenario in which baseball's onetime underdogs go all the way.
