Motez knows his way around a dance floor. Since first releasing music in 2010, the Iraq-born, Adelaide-based producer has teamed up with Tkay Maidza, The Kite String Tangle and Antony & Cleopatra and remixed the likes of RÜFÜS DU SOL, Flight Facilities and Disclosure. When it came to programming the perfect summer playlist, he selected big, emotional tracks that would trigger poignant memories and create new sensations along the way. “It’s a playlist of songs that make me think of summers past and summers yet to come,” Motez told Apple Music in late 2021. “Some new stuff, older stuff and a couple of classics. Happy, energetic, warm and local gems, with a touch of tribal. After missing out on last summer because we’ve been locked down, it’s time to truly appreciate and celebrate Australian summer in what are always the best months of the year. If you see me live, you’ll probably hear a few of the songs in my sets.” Prepare to catch Motez on the road with this buoyant playlist, and read on for a few of his personal favourites. Motez, “ReSet” “The response to my ReSet EP has been incredible, especially the title track. I was lucky enough to play a handful of shows over the last few months—I saw first-hand the love people have for it and the response I get when it’s played. This is going to be a staple in my sets for a long time.” Dark Sky, “Know For Sure” “I’ve been playing this song at least once a day since it was released. Just beautifully put together, it’s so warm and emotive. This is the kind of music that truly makes me close my eyes and dance. Dark Sky’s She 2.0 EP is incredible: one of the best of the year, in my opinion.” For Those I Love, “I Have a Love” (Overmono Remix) “Most of the time I end up closing my set with this song because for me it is the perfect conclusion to a show. For Those I Love is an extraordinary artist and poet—he really pulls on your heartstrings. The Overmono remix takes it to a whole new level.” DJ Seinfeld, “These Things Will Come To Be” “I’ve always loved DJ Seinfeld’s music, but this song takes the cake. It’s beautifully crafted and those chords really glide across the song. The voicemail in the middle paints the tone of the song really well: it’s about loss but also about hope and moving forward. Totally fits with the theme of the last few months we’ve all endured.” moktar, “Lemon” “He’s the man of the moment, really putting Australian electronic music on the map. Fantastic record and the fact that moktar uses a lot of Arabic samples really hits home for me (no pun intended). As an Arab this makes me incredibly proud. It’s a certified banger.” Michael Gray, “The Weekend” (Original 12 Inch Mix) “What a classic! I love this song so much. I don’t get to play it often anymore, but it’ll always be one of THE summer house songs for me. There have been so many remixes of it over the years, but the original 12” mix is my favourite. It’s warm, bubbly and happy!”
