Mo’Ju Essentials

Mojo Ruiz de Luzuriaga has bent their raw, emotive voice to a diverse range of settings, mining vintage blues and soul before welcoming electronics and rap-worthy swagger on their breakthrough 2018 single “Native Tongue.” The latter is both an interrogation and a celebration of identity, with the Melbourne artist unpacking their queerness along with their Filipino and Wiradjuri ancestry. That sharp shift in tone soon heralded a name change from Mojo Juju to simply Mo’ju—and a move towards more pop and modern R&B terrain, as heard on 2021’s funky yet deeply introspective “Sometime.” And on 2022’s “Change Has to Come,” de Luzuriaga mingles earworm hooks with an urgent call to fight for political change beyond the insular act of just “scream[ing] at our screens.”
