Moby: Influences

Moby: Influences

Moby broke into techno with a hard-hitting sound inspired by rave anthems like Joey Beltram's “Energy Flash,” but his debut single was a slinky hip-hop cut closer in spirit to M/A/R/R/S' “Pump Up the Volume.” As a teenager, he played in punk bands and listened to noisy groups like Public Image Ltd.; no wonder he'd go on to cover Joy Division, channeling their sullen vocals and searing guitars.
