Miwa represents the arrival of a new generation of Japanese music. This is true symbolically—she became the first artist born in the ‘90s to top the Japanese album charts—and musically, as her guitar-powered pop injects a jolt of youthful energy into the genre. Her unorthodox approach has most notably produced driving pop-rock anchored by electric guitar and scream-along choruses. Not one to be pinned down, however, Miwa is equally at home with a captivating folk ballad and has dipped her toes into electro-pop to build some of her most buzzing (and buzzworthy) tracks.
