Mercedes Sosa Essentials

At the forefront of Latin America's nueva canción scene in the mid-‘60s and beyond, this Argentine singer remained a figure of national renown even after a forced exile during the brutal rule of Jorge Videla. Admiringly known as “La Negra”, Sosa celebrated her dual European/Andean heritage, carefully preserving traditional Argentinian folk ballads while interpreting works by fellow Latin cosmopolitans Horacio Guarany and Milton Nascimento. Over a 50-year career, she remained committed to advocating political change, lending her resounding voice for those she named “the voiceless”.
