For an artist who admits to being shy when offstage, Megan MacInerney showcases great strength and fortitude in her lyrics. “Give Me My Name Back” is an empowering song about reclaiming dignity and self-worth; “Roll Up Your Sleeves” is a reminder, to herself, that no matter what, everything is going to be all right. The Melbourne-based artist grew up in Sydney in a house full of Irish music (her mother) and Motown/soul (her dad), and it’s the latter that has provided the biggest inspiration professionally—most obviously in her 2014 cover of Bill Withers’ “Grandma’s Hands.” Over the years, however, she’s incorporated more modern elements into her sound, particularly in the ominous synths of “I’m Not Coming Back” and the sampled beats and dark melodies of “Hope.”
