Brave, curious and cosmopolitan, Cape Verde’s Mayra Andrade is the millennial voice of the archipelago. Her music embraces her homeland’s Batuque heritage, juggling it with balmy reggae and samba hybrids. Debut album Navega (2006) is a masterclass of vocal leaps and cavaquinho-speckled serenades, but by fourth album Lovely Difficult (2013) she’s started flirting with pop and, on cuts like “Build It Up”, a darker rock vibe. To highlight just how open to new ideas Andrade is, there’s also a collaboration with Lisbon electronic producer Branko on starry-eyed 2016 single “Reserva Pra Dois”.
