Masters of Reality Essentials

Chris Goss has been called the godfather of '90s stoner rock for producing magma-metal classics by the likes of Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age. But his own band, Masters of Reality, hews closer to bluesy late-'60s power trios like Cream—to the point of recruiting that band's Ginger Baker on drums for a spell. On 1988's “The Blue Garden” you hear the same balance of muscle and melody that buddy Josh Homme would flex a decade later in QOTSA, while the 1993 hit single “She Got Me (When She Got Her Dress On)” showcases the Masters at their barn-burning best, as they whip a galloping snare rhythm into a blitzkrieg boogie.
