German keyboardist, composer and producer Martin Kohlstedt follows in the wake of self-styled artists like Nils Frahm and Joep Beving, deftly borrowing ideas from pop, jazz and electronic music and enfolding them into a sophisticated yet accessible post-classical sound. Shimmering grand piano occupies the heart of his music, as he explores subtle shifts in cycling melodies that connect the fragility of Erik Satie with the minimalism of Philip Glass. Kohlstedt has continually expanded his pallet, adding subtle percussive accents or the lush harmonies of the Gewandhaus Chamber Choir, or gamely submitting pieces to remixes by the likes of techno master Christian Löffler.
