Marika Hackman Essentials

Marika Hackman is not one to mess with. The singer-songwriter (born in 1992, in Hampshire, England) is brutally honest—often sardonically so—as she navigates love and sexuality through visceral alt-pop rooted in haunting folk. The multi-instrumentalist took to music from a young age, and after attending Hampshire’s Bedales School (alongside former bandmate Cara Delevingne), she forwent a fine arts degree to dive headfirst into a solo music career in 2012. She’s been a potent voice on the indie scene ever since, slipping between the dark acoustic meditations of her 2015 debut, We Slept at Last, the knotty indie rock of 2017’s I’m Not Your Man, and the gnarly intertwining of both that drives Hackman’s seductive, subversive version of heart-on-sleeve pop.
