Maribelle: The Songwriters

Maribelle: The Songwriters

In her own work and as an in-demand co-writer, Maribelle has a knack for reframing even the most intense emotional journeys as opportunities for ecstatic release. Her 2016 single “Say It” sets a plea for romantic openness against throbbing alt-pop, and the Filipino Australian singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist brings a similar sensitivity to her more recent work under the name Vetta Borne. Calling that project an “elevated” version of Maribelle, she foregrounds queerness and vulnerability in increasingly funky tunes like 2020’s heartbreak-inspired “Girls” and 2021’s disco-licked “Kissing Strangers.” Maribelle’s compassionate depiction of painful relationships has been long been a calling card: It rings out loud and clear on George Alice’s 2019 hit “Circles,” which she co-wrote and produced. Yet she can easily zoom on too, portraying daily life in Sydney’s Campbelltown suburb on R&B singer Becca Hatch’s 2020 debut single “2560.” And when she jumps on a track as a guest vocalist, you’d better believe that Maribelle is going to deliver a poignant punch every time.
