Mango Groove: Amaqhawe

“The notion of heritage is a very broad notion indeed, and quite difficult to encapsulate in its totality,” Mango Groove’s lead singer-songwriter, Claire Johnston, tells Apple Music. “There are so many aspects to our heritage, and particularly so in a country as vast and diversified and as historically complex as South Africa. Yet heritage, properly understood, is something that is eclectic, dynamic, and interpenetrative by its very nature—shifting, evolving, mutating.” For Amaqhawe, our celebration of South Africa’s musical legends, the group curates a timeline of hits from Nico Carstens, Yes, Bright Blue, Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, Laurika Rauch, Lucky Dube, Freshlyground, and more. “Cultures feed off each other and invariably influence each other; it’s how they survive and prosper,” Johnston explains. “The more we are able to bring such huge richness and diversity and difference under the overarching sky of one country, the more we can feel proud of our spirit of tolerance and inclusivity and belonging as South Africans. Identity, belonging, connection, across whatever cultural, identity-based, or historical differences.”
