Christian Benson certainly has a deft ear when it comes to playful flips of iconic material. The Australian dance producer—better known as Luude—scored his commercial breakthrough with a 2021 drum ’n’ bass reworking of Men At Work’s “Down Under,” ramping up the flute hook and recruiting original singer Colin Hay to record new vocals. Since that fortuitous stroke of musical intuition born during lockdown, Benson has worked similar magic with soca singer Kevin Lyttle’s 2003 smash “Turn Me On” (rechristened “TMO”) and Moby’s blissful 2000 single “Porcelain” (now “Oh My”), tapping fresh new guest vocalists in both cases. Yet, after years of releasing tracks ranging from svelte and ticklish to brash and bass-heavy, Benson has proven that he can pull out original material every bit as fun as his cheeky reinventions. Case in point: 2024’s “Pachamama” leads swaggering Swedish singer Elliphant through a fleet-footed earworm named after an Incan goddess of fertility.
