Hunter Hunt-Hendrix’s vision for Liturgy is anchored by black metal’s turbulent signifiers: discordant guitars, windswept screams, knotty arrangements. However, her musical ambition and execution grew in parallel with Liturgy’s evolution from a solo to a full-band project. Mysterious harp shimmers give way to abrasive riffs on H.A.Q.Q.’s “VIRGINITY,” while hypnotic, clashing guitars pile atop one another on the instrumental “Generation.” Liturgy’s 2020 opera Origin of the Alimonies even incorporates horns and strings; on “Lonely OIOION,” tranquil flute and organ pierce an ominous metallic fog.
