Lena Horne: Deep Cuts

Lena Horne: Deep Cuts

Underneath Lena Horne's sophisticated pop lurks some unadulterated jazz and blues. Early on the singer worked with both Charlie Barnet's big band, delivering a deeply sorrowful lead on the ballad “Haunted Town,” and swing pianist Teddy Wilson, recording the woozy and romantic “Out of Nowhere.” As a member of NBC's Chamber Music Society, she released a rendition of W.C. Handy's “St. Louis Blues” that showcases her graceful phrasing.
