Kenny Barron Essentials

Kenny Barron has been a giant of jazz piano since the late '60s, known for playing with all the grace and meticulousness of a jeweler carving crystal. The swing ballad “In the Slow Lane,” recorded with just drums and double bass, shows his ability to keep a light touch even when playing swift, dense phrases, but he can also drop lyrical flashes that test the limits of his hands, as on the post-bop maze “Phantoms.” Barron also possesses a sympathetic ear, making him an ideal duettist: The way he dances around Regina Carter's fluid violin on “Fragile” is both extravagant and restrained.
