Kate Bush Essentials

Summoning raw desire with her piercing soprano and interpretive dance moves, Kate Bush was a sensation from the start with her Emily Brontë-inspired 1978 debut single, “Wuthering Heights.” Released when the creative powerhouse from Kent, England was still just 19 years old, it introduced both her enchanting howl of a voice and her career-long penchant for unusual creative choices. Bush also brought along a striking sense of drama inherited from diverse art and cultures, as heard on 1978’s cinematic “Hammer Horror” and 1982’s “The Dreaming,” inspired by Australia’s Indigenous peoples. Bush truly hit her stride with 1985’s masterful Hounds of Love—included on Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums List—veering between synth-pop, piano balladry, Irish folk, and earthy lyricism. The album has continued to resonate through subsequent generations, with the title track covered by post-punk act The Futureheads in 2005 and the especially urgent “Running up That Hill (A Deal with God)” topping charts in multiple countries in 2022, thanks to prominent placement on the TV sensation Stranger Things. A year after the album’s release, Bush was duetting with Peter Gabriel on “Don’t Give Up” from his smash album So. Though her output has slowed considerably since mid-1990s hits like “Rubberband Girl,” current artists like Lorde, Chappell Roan, and Florence + the Machine have all drawn upon Bush’s rich legacy.
