Justine Clarke Essentials

Not many children’s entertainers can boast songs co-written by rock royalty, but Sydney’s Justine Clarke can. Not only did You Am I frontman Tim Rogers join her on the full-blooded guitar anthem “R.O.C.K and Roll Hey Hey Hey,” but Josh Pyke—another of Australia’s favorite songwriters—teamed up with Clarke to co-write “A Banana Is a Banana.” That song’s whimsical lyrics—“If an eggplant really grew eggs/Chickens would be out of a job”—are typical of a performer who likes to make the little ones laugh. But just as important as laughter is learning, and Clarke ticks that box with tunes such as “Watermelon,” a reminder of the nutritional value of fruit that’s wrapped inside a jaunty, calypso-styled ditty. Clarke—who is also an acclaimed actor—has long drawn on musical influences from all around the globe, be it the New Orleans jazz flourishes in “Song to Make You Smile” or the surf rock and ’60s girl-group touches in “Dinosaur Roar.”
