Jungle Essentials

As Jungle, London-based production duo Tom McFarland and Josh Lloyd-Watson have gone to great lengths to allow their music to speak for itself. Childhood friends, the pair first came to prominence with the release of their self-titled debut album in 2014—referring to themselves only as T and J, refraining from releasing publicity images and instead translating their warm, ’70s-funk-and-soul-inspired sound into a collective seven-piece band onstage. The album went on to receive a Mercury Music Prize nomination, while single “Busy Earnin’,” with its infectiously driving melody and sparse groove, was soon ubiquitous in the UK and beyond via multiple TV syncs and appearances in car ads and video game soundtracks. Second album For Ever, released in 2018, delved deeper into the communal, luminous funk of influences including Nile Rodgers’ Chic and The Gap Band while the pair became more emotionally eloquent in their lyrics. Singles “Casio” and “Heavy, California” were accompanied by distinctive, one-shot videos directed by Lloyd-Watson, showcasing the innate kinetic energy of their grooves through intricate choreography. Although McFarland and Lloyd-Watson may have ultimately failed to remain anonymous, it is because of the toe-tapping power of their deceptively simplistic music—a sound that is rightfully pervasive and timeless.
