John Hiatt Essentials

John Hiatt had his first success when Three Dog Night covered his “Sure As I'm Sittin' Here,” and he was later marketed as an angry young man in the Elvis Costello mode. That changed with 1987's Bring the Family, a gritty songwriting classic inspired by necessary changes in his life. His trademark approach, always thoughtful but never too mellow, had endeared him to a cult audience over the years. His songs have been recorded by Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, and Aaron Neville, but they're arguably best served by Hiatt's own rough and authentic voice.
