Jefferson Starship Essentials

Just as Jefferson Airplane were a quintessential ’60s Bay Area band, their next evolution helped define American rock from the mid-’70s into the early ’80s, when AOR ruled the realm. As Jefferson Starship, the former psychedelic soldiers adopted an approach that could shift from sensuous, heart-stopping ballads like “Miracles” and “With Your Love” to hook-heavy arena-rock milestones like “Jane” and “Find Your Way Back.” The unbeatable vocal tag team of Grace Slick and Marty Balin (and his mighty successor, Mickey Thomas) and the guitar fireworks of Craig Chaquico front-loaded the band with enough rocket power to break through the stratosphere with ease—before they shifted once more to become ’80s pop titans as Starship.
