Jax Jones: My LNY Party

For Jax Jones, Lunar New Year—and the holiday period as a whole—is all about love. Born to a Turkish father and a Chinese Malaysian mother, the DJ/producer often travels from his home in London back to Malaysia to celebrate with his family. To bring in 2020, he’s created a playlist and shared insight into his family’s traditions and history. “I used to travel back to Malaysia to see my kungkung and popo, who are sadly not alive anymore,” Jones tells Apple Music. “So, now it is about remembering my grandparents and knowing they still watch over us with the rest of our ancestors. Often when I was younger, I would travel on my own and the air hostess would take me to the pilot’s cockpit as a special surprise to celebrate.” Like many Chinese families, Jones and his relatives reunite each year to eat and exchange red envelopes. Music is, of course, just as important—especially when you’re a renowned party-starter. “As a DJ, the best way for me to share love with everyone is through my music and putting on the best party possible,” he says. “My song [for 2020] would be the theme song to the Jet Li film Swordsman II. I used to watch this film repeatedly before bedtime with my kungkung, and we would sing this song all day long! It’s a wonderful song of hope. I pray everyone is able to give and receive as much love as possible this year,” says Jones of his New Year wishes. “And to know how to appreciate the people that are close to them.”
