Jakuzi have roots in Turkey’s underground punk scene so, given that status as outliers, they were probably unprepared for the near-instant success of debut album Fantezi Müzik in 2017. Marrying synth-pop, Krautrock and post-punk sensibilities, the Istanbul act brought introspection into the mainstream, with downbeat rhythms underscoring vocalist Kutay Soyocak’s mournfully delivered lyrics. But there are triumphant dance-floor numbers as well, that stay true to their darkwave-inspired sound while journeying deeper into Soyocak’s psyche as he addresses mental health and relationships.
