Powered by soaring guitars and clubby electronics, Aussie indie pop star Jack River (real name Holly Rankin) achieves full flight across her climactic songs. That’s due as much to her pleading, full-bodied singing as to her subtly layered lyrics. Take her 2017 breakthrough “Fool’s Gold,” a breathy dream-pop anthem that lingered over the false promise of certain temptations in life. Likewise, River’s 2018 album, Sugar Mountain, tackled grief and other tough topics with an empowering edge. She flexed her pure bubblegum prowess on 2019’s hit Peking Duk team-up “Sugar,” before turning introspective again on 2020’s Stranger Heart EP.
