In Flames Essentials

Formed in 1990 in Sweden, metal pioneers In Flames helped to create the sound known as melodic death metal. Combining the harsh, high-speed assault of first-wave death metal with the melodic guitar solos and harmonized riffs of vintage ‘70s heavy metal, they toiled in the Gothenburg scene before scoring international acclaim with their 1996 sophomore release The Jester Game. They produced eight more albums over the next 14 years, eventually moving away from their death metal roots and toward a more polished, alternative metal sound.
