Imogen Holst Essentials

England's Imogen Holst, child of renowned composer Gustav Holst, enjoyed a multifaceted career as a scholar, educator, and festival director, but she also composed a substantial body of work during the 20th century. Bolstered by training from the Royal College of Music and an independent spirit, she purveyed chamber and orchestral works, choral pieces, and instrumentals while incorporating a keen appreciation for English folk traditions. She also engaged in formal experiments, developing unusual scales for chamber and vocal works that have assumed renewed importance through posthumous appreciation for her compositions.
