Don’t let the amusing, self-deprecating name fool you: the music of I Belong to the Zoo is as heartbreaking as it is cathartic. While fronting alt-rockers Tonight We Sleep, Argee Guerrero started his folk-tinged project to provide a more delicate and stripped-back canvas to spotlight his emotional songwriting all the more intimately. He depicts unrequited love just as lucidly in English (“Courage”) as in his native Filipino (“Sana”, “Balang Araw”). And as full-band tracks like “Balita” and “Paumanhin” prove, an electrifying indie blowout is sometimes too irresistible to refuse.
