Gretchen Wilson Essentials

Gretchen Wilson hit country music like a comet. "Redneck Woman," from 2004, was the unstoppable crash landing: Over a twangy, even heavy groove, the Illinois singer proudly lists all the habits that make her the kind of gal she names in the title. On "Here for the Party," she's equally defiant, challenging the listener to go as hard as she does while a guitar riff rages in the background. Yet Wilson is equally adept at crafting after-party slow jams, such as "I'd Love to Be Your Last," a soft, late-night love letter in which she whispers a heartfelt message over quietly fingerpicked acoustic guitar.
