Goldfinger Essentials

While closely associated with the ska-punk resurgence of the ’90s, Goldfinger is an eclectic and versatile band. Co-founded in the mid-’90s by vocalist-guitarist John Feldmann, the L.A. band skanked to mainstream success with nimble, uptempo tunes like the horn-peppered “Superman,” the heartfelt “Here In Your Bedroom,” and a breakneck-speed cover of Nena’s ’80s hit “99 Red Balloons.” At the turn of the century, Goldfinger started expanding its sound, dabbling not just in no-frills punk but also in thrashing pop-punk (“Counting the Days”), laidback reggae (“Tijuana Sunrise”), and even poppy emo rock (“Wasted”). However, the group embraced its ska-punk roots on 2020’s Never Look Back, featuring horns from Reel Big Fish’s Matt Appleton and some loving re-recordings of its earliest hits.
