George Winston Essentials

This multi-instrumentalist's mature sound can channel a range of musical influences, but he's best-known for his rural folk piano. Starting in the '80s, Winston's work dealt in the luxurious, gentle lines familiar to new age trends, but he also added in other textures: bluesy harmonies, John Cage-esque prepared piano sounds—as on “(Love Echoes in the) Pine Hills”—and slowed-down contrapuntal lines borrowed from jazz greats who played in the stride style (“Road”). All that sonic diversity never put his pieces off-balance and is a testament to his craft as a composer and performer.
