Gary Barlow Essentials

A prodigious pop craftsman once dubbed “the next George Michael,” Gary Barlow led ‘90s boy band Take That to global stardom before embarking on his own chart-topping solo career. The British icon was born in Cheshire in 1971 and acquired his first keyboard at 10 years old—after seeing Depeche Mode on Top of the Pops. Nearly a decade later, he formed Take That, penning blockbuster hits “Patience” and “Back for Good.” The sweeping orchestral arrangements of Barlow's 1997 solo debut, Open Road, cemented his pop mastery, later stepping up as a producer on hit records for Elton John and former bandmate Robbie Williams.
