Forming in the mid-‘90s, New York's Fountains of Wayne perfected a clever, modern take on power pop, delivering immaculately catchy songs with a heart of gold. Their early material included retro-tinted nods to glammy '70s rock ("Red Dragon Tattoo") and fuzzed-out British Invasion pop ("Radiation Vibe"), while on later albums, the group embraced a richer sound indebted to cheeky New Wave (embodied in the hopelessly lovestruck synth-rock anthem "Stacy's Mom"). But Fountains of Wayne never skimped on the lyrical sincerity either, with acoustic campfire jams like “Hey Julie” underlining the sweet sentimentality at the heart of the band.
