Footwork

Born from the raw, speedy sounds of juke and booty house, and steeped in the competitive spirit of Chicago dance-battle culture, footwork spent the 2000s gathering steam in underground communities, then exploded into view worldwide with Planet Mu’s 2010 compilation Bangs & Works, Vol. 1, which offered many listeners their first brush with pioneering producers like RP Boo, DJ Nate, and the late DJ Rashad, who passed away in 2014. In the years since, the sample-heavy sound has remained one of the most dynamic and progressive styles in electronic music, folding a dazzling array of inspirations—funk, R&B, rap, house, even yacht rock—into hypnotic, intricately syncopated grooves.
