Fairport Convention Essentials

English folk-rock simply wouldn't exist without Fairport Convention. They released their eponymous debut in 1968 and, just one year later, invented the genre on their fourth record Liege & Lief. Their sound was at once traditional and new, mixing songs adapted from British and Celtic folk with originals that sounded like standards, and delivering it all with electric instruments and Sandy Denny's inimitable and bewitching voice. Denny quit before the album's release—one of countless lineup changes over the years—but the band still tours, with well over 40 albums to their name.
