Evelyn "Champagne" King Essentials

Growing up in Philadelphia, Evelyn King earned the nickname "Bubbles" thanks to her sparkling personality. When she recorded latter-day disco classic "Shame" in 1977, brandishing a voice that was impressively robust for her 16 years, producer T. Life rebranded her "Champagne." For the next 10 years King released platinum- and gold-selling LPs, charting with floor-filling roller-rink classics like "I'm In Love" and "Love Come Down." Along the way she traded lush disco for funky, minimalist R&B and electro-pop—an era-appropriate transition facilitated by the drum machines and MIDI synths of producer/songwriter Kashif.
