Elvin Jones Essentials

Elvin Jones Essentials

One of the most important figures in hard-bop and post-bop drumming, Elvin Jones produced smooth shuffles (“Half and Half”) and driving blows (“The Biscuit Man”) that helped guide jazz through the infinite transformations of the ‘60s. Although some of his best-known work was in collaboration with Coltrane from 1960 to 1966, his solo albums were equally formidable for pushing the rhythms and temporal limits of hard bop (“Shiny Stockings”), coming into a style that was more free and mercurial—due, in part, to Jones' fantastic, fireworks-invoking solos (“Reza”).
