Dorothy Essentials

Dorothy’s back-to-basics hard rock felt like a breath of fresh air when the Los Angeles band emerged in the 2010s. Lead singer Dorothy Martin’s full-throated, blues-inflected vocals were the focal point from the beginning—larger than life on the band’s recordings and in concert, soaring above the heavy-duty, grunge-like arrangements. The mournful “After Midnight” served as the group’s introduction to the world, finding overlap with The White Stripes and roots music as well as metal acts like Black Sabbath. Subsequent bluesy singles such as “Wicked Ones” continued in this direction, and the band steadily climbed the rock charts from there. The 2021 cut “Rest In Peace” became Dorothy’s biggest smash to date—a break-up power ballad coupling a spiritual-like melody with mournfulness in the verses.
